Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo

The Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo are located just a few kilometers from Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District, in the northern part of Rwanda. The lakes can easily be visited after exploring the many activities available in the Volcanoes region, including gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking, Dian Fossey Tomb, and hiking adventures on Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Gahinga.

Burera and Ruhondo are known as the Twin Lakes because they are located within the same area and were formed as a result of volcanic activity in the region. Their beautiful landscapes, peaceful waters, and surrounding communities make them one of the most scenic destinations to explore in northern Rwanda.

The Story Behind the Twin Lakes

The formation of the Twin Lakes is closely connected to the volcanic activity of the Virunga Mountains. Before the formation of Burera and Ruhondo, the Nyabarongo River flowed northwards toward Ndorwa in Rwanda. Volcanic activity blocked the river's northern flow, contributing to the formation of the lakes and changing the surrounding drainage system.

The resulting waterways eventually connected with the Akanyaru River, contributing to the formation of the Akagera River, which flows through several important landscapes and attractions, including Akagera National Park.

Discover the Beauty Around the Twin Lakes

After enjoying an activity in Volcanoes National Park, you can descend to the Twin Lakes and experience more than just the beautiful lake scenery. The area offers wetlands, spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains, and opportunities to interact with local communities.

Around the lakes, you can observe local people going about their daily activities, including fishing, farming, livestock grazing, and other traditional activities. This provides an authentic opportunity to experience rural life in Rwanda.
