Twin lakes Burera and Ruhondo lies in few kilometers from
volcano national park in musanze district (northern part of Rwanda). The lakes
can be accessed after visiting different activities found in volcano national
park like; Gorilla trekking, Golden monkeys, Dian Fossey tomb and Hiking,
especially Mount Karisimbi, Mount Bisoke, Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo and Mount
Gahinga. Burera and Ruhondi given the
name of Twin Lakes because of the fact that they are found within the same area
and they were both formed as a results of eruption by mount Muhabura.
Before the formation of the twin lakes of Burera and
Ruhondo, there was the Nyabarongo River was flowing northwards to Ndorwa in
Rwanda, when the volcanic eruption happened, Nyabarongo’s flow to the north was
blocked which led to the formation of the Twin lakes and the diversion that was
formed after Nyabarongo blocking flowing up and down, came across the Akanyaru
river which led to the formation of Akagera river which across the number of
attractions including the Akagera National Park.
After visiting any activity chosen in volcano national park,
You will descend to the twin lakes where you will not only see the lakes but
also the number attractions like the wetlands, the lake will provide a great
viewpoint of the virunga mountain which is located in DRC Congo, Local
communities that can be seen around the lakes where the number of people will
be seen going and their daily activities like fishing, cultivating, grazing and
so many activities.

ACTIVITIES THAT ARE FOUND IN THE TWIN LAKES OF BURERA & RUHONDO.
1. Fishing; the
twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo offer great opportunity for fishing to be
carried out. With the help of local fishermen that have over 25 years of
experience and by this you can decide to
take part in the fishing process with the fishermen where you will have a
chance to catch the different types of fish; like the tilapia which is the
commonest type of fish in this lake. This activity will enable you to engage
with the fishermen that will even try to teach you Kinyarwanda language as you
interact with them.
2.Canoeing: On
the shores on the fresh water lakes, there are always canoes that are ready to
transport tourists from one place to another as a tour in the lake, on the
canoe trip, a number of water birds can be seen like the African kingfisher
trying hard to catch prey. There are also exceptional views of the all five
mountains of the volcano national park and beautiful of the lakes with the
different island, in the trip in canoeing, we also cross together with local
communities having their own canoes transporting passengers.
